I think if you could find one of those things and use it to drive the power amp and cabinet of your choice you'd be able to get pretty close to the various eras of ZZ Top tone. Seemed pretty loud for 50 watts too, but it was probably more than 20 years ago. I thought it was a no-brainer to get happening medium-gain crunchy classic rock and southern rock type of tones with it. Gibbons Special features some of the finest hardware you can expect on an electric guitar. The amp itself had preamp tubes and SS output stage, so probably not huge iron inside. I don't remember it being unusually heavy either, although the finger-jointed oak head shell probably weighs a fair bit less than the combo's finger-jointed oak cabinet would weigh.
